One actor we’d like to see doing much more work, is Barry Pepper. He was unforgettable in “SAVING PRIVATE RYAN” and did a fine job in a small but memorable role in “ENEMY OF THE STATE.” However, he hasn’t had any starring roles, other than that of Roger Maris(and that was a co-starring role) until now! Pepper gives a great performance in “3-THE DALE EARNHARDT STORY”. One doesn’t have to like or even care about car racing(this reviewer doesn’t!) to enjoy this film. Pepper makes this role his own, and manages to overcome all of the clichés that are so abundant in this made-for-cable movie. He’s on screen for virtually the entire film and it’s never too much.
Another thing helping the film is incredibly tight direction from Russell Mulcahy. When he's bad, he's really bad. But, when he's great(HIGHLANDER), he's terrific! Here, his direction is terrific!
When the film ends, one will wish it only wish there was more! Not a bad indicator of how engaging the film is!
BUENA VISTA has preserved the film’s 1.85:1 aspect ratio. It’s a great transfer with perfect colors and incredible detail. There isn’t one scene that’s marred with average quality. Fleshtones appear natural throughout.
BUENA VISTA has provided a Dolby Digital 5.1 mix. While there isn’t much surround involvement, the rear speakers and bass kick in during the crucial car race scenes. Dialogue is always intelligible and free from distortion.
BUENA VISTA has released this as a 2 disc set with plenty of extras!
Standing out the most is the featurette, “THE MAKING OF 3” offering plenty of interviews and behind-the-scenes footage.
