I Am Legend 4K (Blu-ray)
SRP $44.95 2.39:1 DTS-HD MA 5.1 WARNER BROS

WARNER BROS has given the 4K treatment to the over-looked "I AM LEGEND." While imperfect, "I AM LEGEND" still manages to be one of the better remakes of the past decade. Far better than the previous WB adaptation of Richard Matheson's classic(OMEGA MAN)starring Charlton Heston, Will Smith gives a performance that makes him appear made for this part.

Set in an apocalyptic landscape, Smith plays Scientist Robert Neville, trying to find a cure for the disease that's made mutants of seemingly everyone left on Earth other than him. Smith has to carry most of the film on his own, intermittently faced by mutants, dogs, or other elements of the harsh environment, set to destroy him. Smith's acting ability brings depth to his character and the loneliness he must contend with, but without ever having to rely upon unnecessary exposition. It's not an easy task but he's aided by a clever script, masterful direction and his uncanny ability to seemingly connect with the audience on some level in virtually every scene.  While the ending(including the alternate ending only available on the blu-ray included) disappoints, it's only because everything preceding it, feels so original.

The 2K DI has been up-converted to 4K and along with the HDR utilized, this release offers a discernible upgrade over the standard blu-ray! Blacks are deeper, detail is much more impressive and colors are richer, with a wider breadth. The image of gray decaying buildings contrasting with the lush colors of nature overtaking brick, is amazing to observe as it's been presented here.

The CGI is even more impressive now due to the higher resolution making their accomplishment stand up to deeper scrutiny. The production design is also more impressive as revealed in 4K glory!  All catalogue titles given the 4K treatment should look this good!

The previously available Dolby TrueHD 5.1 mix is presented here with a DTS-HD MA 5.1 mix. There are no discernible differences between the two mixes. Both offer a stellar array of discrete and deep bass effects, especially impressive for the rousing finale! Don't miss out on this release!
