FOX has released the latest in the "ICE AGE" series, "ICE AGE COLLISION COURSE" on 4K UltraHD Blu-Ray. Loveable Scrat is back again and his quest for that acorn that always slips away causes him to leave Earth's atmosphere for interstellar hijinks. With this being the "5th" in the series, it would be easily expected to offer redundancy and likely be less impressive than those 4 preceding it, but thankfully this isn't the case.
Sure, there are some gags that have been only minimally changed because they've worked before, but the script is actually pretty witty and the voice talents of Ray Romano and most the original cast members are back and giving these characters the magic they've been relied upon over and over and they've "still got it!"
Just as importantly, as much as kids will enjoy "ICE AGE COLLISION COURSE," there are enough creative, witty jokes included, certain to please discerning adult viewers as well.
FOX has retained the correct 2.40:1 aspect ratio for this HEVC H.265 encoded transfer. The 2K DI has been up-converted for this 4K presentation. While the blu-ray included herein, is impressive, the 4K offers noticeably better detail. While the image isn't 3D, the detail is certainly applause-worthy! It's great throughout, but even more-so during the space scenes. The colors on the standard blu-ray are rich, but the HDR offers even richer colors and tones in 4K. This release easily demonstrates the superiority of 4K even over great looking blu-rays.
FOX has provided a Dolby Atmos mix. While the overhead channels definitely kick in with added immersion, other discrete effects aren't consistently as creative as one would expect. It's an immersive mix throughout, but it's just not as thoroughly rousing as one would've hoped for.
"SCRAT SPACED OUT" is offered in 4K and the rest of the supplementary material is provided in 1080p format.
