Meg Ryan has never looked hotter than she does in “AGAINST THE
ROPES.” So, the good news is that she’s one of the lucky few getting
better looking as she ages. Unfortunately, her choice in materials
isn’t extremely picky. This “based on a true story” boxing film
features Ryan as Jackie Kallen, a real-life boxing manager/promoter.
After being challenged to train a fighter, she seeks the help she
needs in this quest from Luther, (Charles Dutton-who also directs).
Together with Omar Epps, they try to beat all odds. What we’re left
with is “Rocky-light” but with a syrupy, “Flashdance meets Rudy” type
of atmosphere. Enjoyable but not something that deserves repeated
PARAMOUNT has preserved the film’s 2.35:1 aspect ratio, with 16:9
enhancement. Colors are outstanding here! There’s great detail as
well and grain is minimal. Fleshtones appear natural throughout.
PARAMOUNT has provided a Dolby Digital 5.1 mix. It’s an aggressive
mix, particularly effective during the boxing scenes. However, it’s
engrossing throughout most of the film, complimenting the score and
creating a 3-d environment in many instance. Dialogue is always
intelligible and free from distortion.
In addition to the film’s theatrical trailer, we also get two
featurettes, one of which features the real-life Jackie Kallen.
