I recall catching part of "AKIRA KUROSAWA'S DREAMS" on regular television, late one night. It was the segment taking place with in the middle of a snowstorm. I'd just come upon the middle of this segment, while switching channels. Although I had no idea what I was watching, I was completely enthralled. It was brilliant and hypnotic!
The film is comprised of eight different segments, each of which has its own style and concept. While they don't have a formal narrative, this fact doesn't make them less involving. They're stunning from beginning to end! Martin Scorsese fans will enjoy seeing him portray Van Gogh in one segment.
WARNER BROS. has preserved the film's 1.85:1 aspect ratio, with 16:9 enhancement. It's a brilliant transfer. Colors are flawlessly presented here. The image always has perfect clarity. Contrast is also outstanding, with great clarity in darker scenes. Fleshtones are perfectly natural throughout.
WARNER BROS. has presented a DOLBY 2.0 Surround mix for the film's original Japanese track. While a 5.1 remix could've added even more impact to some of the dream segments, this 2.0 mix is suitable. There are ample surround effects, and the front soundstage offers great separation. Dialogue is intelligible and free from distortion.
