Originally filmed for IMAX, "ALIENS OF THE DEEP" follows James Cameron's 2nd effort at making an intriguing documentary, after his previous "Ghosts of the Abyss". While "ALIENS OF THE DEEP" is not without flaws, it's superior to the previous film and offers some unforgettable moments.
Four different submarines, outfitted with advanced camera technology, venture towards the great deep of the ocean in an effort to find various creatures and forms of life, previously undetected. They find some dazzling creatures!
The film's biggest drawback is its focus on the crewmen, Cameron included. It would've been far more effective to focus on the subject matter and leave the audience "wanting" to know the crew more than the other way around!
The 1.78:1 image is spectacular. Colors are vibrant and there's incredible detail in even the darkest moments. The few instances that appear clouded, are un-improvable, based on the location and lighting. It's generally a staggering image!
BUENA VISTA has provided a Dolby Digital 5.1 mix, however, surrounds are generally restrained, save for a subtle effect here and there. The dialogue is always intelligible and free from distortion. Other effects, delegated towards the front soundstage, are impressive.
