Jeff Bridges is arguably one of the most underrated actors in Hollywood, but "THE AMATEURS" does little to prove the actor's abilities. Bridges plays Andy, a likeable guy, wanting to prove his worth to his son, especially after seeing his former wife is remarried and ridiculously wealthy. He comes up with an idea to hit it big,....make a porno! The film is likely to annoy more people than it humors, mostly due its "Full of itself" atmosphere. Everything about this film screams "smug," when in reality it's less satisfying than most "amateur" films, including pornos!
Sure, it's got a terrific cast! But, that just goes to show there are some gifted actors actually willing to take part in something that doesn't look promising(the script sure isn't good)in the hopes that something magical will occur during the filmmaking process. It didn't!
FIRST LOOK has provided the correct 1.85:1 aspect ratio for this 1080p transfer. Unfortunately, the image is consistently flat. While unsure if intended or not, the film has a "amateur" feel to the design, with frequent grain and minimal depth.
FIRST LOOK has provided three mixes, a Dolby Digital 5.1 mix/DTS mix and a 2.0 stereo mix. There are scarce surround effects. Most of the film is front and center. It's a minimalist mix, reminding one that High definition releases are only as good as the original material. Dialogue is always intelligible and free from distortion.
FIRST LOOK has provided a commentary that's far more entertaining than the film, with Bridges, the writer/director and producer. A making of featurette is actually terrific and more interesting than the film itself.
