For newcomers to the "ANGEL" series, it's a necessity to watch at least "Season 3" first. Season 4 picks up where "SEASON 3" left off, and then runs with a steady, gripping pace, at least for most of the season. While each season of the show stands on its own, "SEASON 4" is arguably the best! The entire season is built around one story arc for the most part, and even with cliffhangers at the end of each episode, each is better than stand-alone episodes of the previous seasons. The spin-off of "BUFFY THE VAMPIRE" has always been darker than the "BUFFY" series, but "SEASON 4" is darker than usual, more disturbing, and more engrossing. Fans of David Boreanaz and the beautiful Charisma Carpenter will be pleased with the deep character development of their characters, but even supporting cast members shine here!
FOX has preserved the series' 1.85:1 aspect ratio with 16:9 enhancement. The image is excellent, with incredible detail in the numerous dark scenes throughout the series. Colors and detail are impressive and there are no artifacts. Fleshtones appear natural throughout. It's a great transfer!!!
FOX has presented a DOLBY DIGITAL SURROUND 2.0 mix. While there is some separation in the front soundstage, surround are used sparingly. It's disappointing that they're not utilized more during some key sequences. Even the music is understated due to lack of surround involvement. Dialogue is always intelligible and free from distortion.
FOX has included numerous extras here! In addition to some great commentaries("7"), we also get an option to find he significant events from the whole season, courtesy of clips and interviews with cast members. There are some featurettes, but "ANGEL AND THE APOCALYPSE" stands out as the best.
