SRP $59.98 1.33:1 DOLBY DIGITAL 2.0 SURROUND FOX HOME ENTERTAINMENT

Fans of “BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER” should certainly be pleased with the boxed set releases from FOX HOME ENTERTAINMENT.  Now, they have the chance to begin collecting entire seasons of “ANGEL,” the series which derived from it.  David Boreanaz stars as “ANGEL,” the likeable vampire, who was willing to risk eternity in hell over his love with “Buffy.”  Of course, as “BUFFY” fans know, “Angel” did go to hell, but soon returned, and get this,…with his own series!!!!

With a stroke of genius, the writers have selected to have “ANGEL” return to the Los Angeles, in the attempt to do good for victims on the edge.  As with “BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER,” the writing is outstanding here.  The stories are darker in tone than “BUFFY,” but there’s still some witty gallows humor.  Separating itself from most “spin-off” series of the past, “ANGEL” not only compliments “BUFFY,” it also stands on its own!  In many ways, at least in the first season, it even feels hipper, without succumbing to an “MTV” type of commercialism regarding big payoff endings.  This is one of the few “dark” television shows, which actually works!

FOX HOME ENTERTAINMENT has presented a terrific looking transfer for this boxed set.  The first season’s original 1.33:1 aspect ratio is presented, and it looks superior to its original airing condition!  The image has a sharper look, with outstanding definition. The contrast is top-notch, with deep blacks and grays, allowing for incredible clarity in the show’s frequently dark sequences.

FOX HOME ENTERTAINMENT has presented a Dolby 2.0 Surround mix for this release.  Although there are some surround effects, they’re mostly reserved to boost the music.  The front soundstage utilizes a healthy amount of directional effects, enhancing each episode. Dialogue is always intelligible and free from distortion.

“BUFFY” and “ANGEL” creator, Joss Whedon, along with his co-creator, David Greenwalt, help provide a running commentary for the first episode, and it’s outstanding, not to be missed! The duo displays a real charm and wit, making it a really entertaining experience! We’ve already listened to it twice!   Another great commentary, though not as funny, is provided by writer Jane Esperson, to her memorable episode, RM w/a Vu.  Unfortunately, her commentary is so filled with analysis of the show, she will spoil the surprises of future episodes, for fans who’ve not yet seen them.

FOX HOME ENTERTAINMENT has also included four brief featurettes  but only one, focusing on the beautiful “CORDELIA,” is worth watching.

Also included are some stills and the actual scripts for two great episodes, “FIVE BY FIVE,” and “SANCTURARY.”

While a little disappointed the extras aren’t equivalent to what we’ve grown accustomed to with the “BUFFY” dvd boxed sets, “ANGEL: SEASON ONE” is so fantastic on its own, that the high quality transfer, alone, makes it come highly recommended!
