Another Meltdown - DVD
COLUMBIA TRISTAR has released “ANOTHER MELTDOWN”. Having been directed by Ching Sio Tung, responsible for “CHINESE GHOST STORY” and “HEROIC
TRIO”, there are some great action sequences here. The convoluted plot actually has some nice touches buried deep within
it, such as finding that an old girlfriend of the main character had left Beijing after the student revolts, etc. However, for some reason
insightful character detail is never developed enough. The main character, ArthurWong, is a special agent who has had his job relocated to a made up
country for not being disciplined enough during a hijack rescue operation. Of course, he finds a chance at redemption after catching a notorious
cult leader/killer. But, things get complicated when he’s placed in charge of transporting the prisoner, something his higher ups don’t want him to
succeed at for their own nefarious reasons.
As already mentioned, the fight sequences are typically grand.	Sure, there are instances wherein the continuity appears to have an error or two,
but overall, they’re great and hold up to the best action sequences of today. Remember, this film was made five years ago!
COLUMBIA TRISTAR has presented the film in its proper 1.85:1 aspect ratio, with 16:9 enhancement. While it’s not bad looking, it’s very average,
and that’s disappointing, especially in comparison to what FOX has managed doing with their recent remasterings of their Hong Kong films. The images
here tend to be grainy and soft.
COLUMBIA TRISTAR has presented a Dolby Digital 5.1 mix. It’s not an aggressive mix, although there is some separation in the front, and
surrounds are used in various scenes. Dialogue is always intelligible. There are options for English, Cantonese or Mandarin soundmixes. The
English dubbing isn’t nearly as bad as we’d expected, although we prefer the mix on the Mandarin above all.
Several trailers are included.
