SRP $34.99 1.85:1 PCM 5.1 BUENA VISTA

BUENA VISTA has released Mel Gibson's latest and most entertaining film since "BRAVEHEART," "APOCALYPTO."  While it may be hard for many to overlook this unrepentant racist's comments, "APOCALYPTO" may be his best film yet.  Some may argue about its historical accuracy as to whether it was the Mayans or Aztecs that conducted the bloodiest sacrifice rituals, fact doesn't get in the way of the horrific practice, putting chills into the viewer or identifying with the main character's plight. After Jaguar Paw's village is massacred, and many men, along with him, are taken prisoners, to be sacrificed, we follow his journey as he races against time to escape and get back to save his hidden family.  From beginning to end, "APOCALYPTO" moves at a rapid pace, resembling a car chase on foot, until its surprisingly, effective and provocative climax!

BUENA VISTA has released "APOCALYPTO" on both dvd and blu-ray. Both are presented in the correct 1.85:1 aspect ratio.  Colors are solid and stunning in both formats, however, the dvd has edge enhancement, absent in the blu-ray format.  Detail is excellent in both formats, but, again, the blu-ray offers better depth and less blurring during the faster motion sequences.

BUENA VISTA has provided a Dolby Digital and DTS mix for the dvd. Both are excellent and aggressive, however the DTS mix offers deeper bass and a better dynamic range. The BLU-RAY offers a PCM 5.1 mix. It's excellent, however bass effects are surprisingly less noticeable than on the dvd for some reason. All three mixes are well balanced, with layers of effects providing demonstration quality moments, without overshadowing each other.

The Blu-ray, of course, is the best choice, due to its stellar visual quality, ranking it up there with the best of recent BLU-RAY releases.
