The third entry into the "EVIL DEAD" series, "ARMY OF DARKNESS" has been released as a HD-DVD combo by UNIVERSAL. Not anywhere as scary as the first film, but often funnier than the 2nd, "ARMY OF DARKNESS" has enough blending of wit, low-budget thrills and armies of skeletons, not to mention the chainsaw,  to win over new fans from those not privy to the earlier films.

UNIVERSAL has preserved the film's 1.85:1 aspect ratio.  Its low-budget nature hinders the film's resolution in high-definition. The well-lit scenes offer pretty good detail, and noticeably better than the standard dvd on the opposite side. However, darker scenes suffer from mixed clarity and the contrast isn't much better than dvd. In those scenes where the locations are bright, so is the transfer.

UNIVERSAL has provided a DOLBY DIGITAL PLUS 5.1 mix.  There is little use of bass or surrounds, however in the few scenes wherein rear effects are utilized, this mix shines. There's increased dynamic range over the standard dvd offering.  Dialogue is always intelligible and free from distortion.

No extras here and it's disappointing to find that the director's cut hasn't been offered.
