The opening scene in "ART OF WAR" is certain to please fans of
action films like "DIE HARD" and the "JAMES BOND" series.
Utilizing state-of-art computer graphics, high-tech gadgetry, high-wire stunts,
tense pacing, and slick cinematography, it's a pure adrenalin rush!
Unfortunately, like many action films, the premise behind the entire sequence is
ludicrous at best!
Snipes is a top agent in charge of an elite unit of cops for a secretive
police force of the United Nations. It's like the Keystone cops needing
James Bond to work under them! As the film continues, a more convoluted
plot emerges. Snipes finds himself framed for the assassination of a
Chinese Ambassador. As if that's not
enough, he ends up having practically every government and criminal agency after
him. Eventually, he teams up with a beautiful woman who actually can
identify the true assassin. While there are a few surprises, what's
supposed to be a startling revelation near the end, is predictable too far in
advance.
WARNER BROS. has given this film an exemplary dvd transfer! Its 2.35:1
aspect ratio is intact with 16:9 enhancement. The colors are solid and
contrast is superb! There is great shadow detail, and taking into account
the complexity of numerous night scenes, this is no small accomplishment!
Fleshtones are perfectly natural. All in all, this transfer is
"demonstration" quality with stunning clarity.
The Dolby Digital sound mix is also wonderful! Even though it's not
mentioned anywhere on the dvd jacket, this is a Dolby Digital 6.1(EX) mix!
This is one of the most aggressive soundtracks we've heard all year! The
directional effects, front & rear, are utilized throughout the film.
While
(LFE) effects are a little subdued, they're wonderful when present.
There are numerous trailers, and all of them are anamorphic.
Unfortunately, none of them are in dolby digital 5.1
