"ART SCHOOL CONFIDENTIAL" is one of those films that, while critically panned, really deserves to be seen, and is certain to win over a well-deserved audience on dvd. While not as outlandish in its humor as "BAD SANTA", it's actually a better comedy. While the beginning, especially the opening credits, suggests it's aspiring to be a spoof of a "50s" youth film, it's much deeper than that. It examines the disillusionment of youth, in a very intelligent yet comedic way. The optimistic art student, Jerome, learns through often funny and sentimental moments, success in art often has little to do with craft.
Maybe it sounds simplistic, but it's not. The script carefully maneuvers between comedy, drama and mystery, all the while, having a real heart underneath. The entire cast is perfect.
SONY has provided the correct 1.85:1 aspect ratio with 16:9 enhancement. The image suffers from grain in various scenes, but they're not intrusive enough to distract from the overall quality. Colors are well balanced and detail is great.
SONY has provided a DOLBY DIGITAL 5.1 mix. Most of the mix is delegated towards the center channel, but music is well complimented through all speakers.
SONY has included 12 deleted scenes, a featurette and more.
