French Director Luc Besson has demonstrated both a great love for the sea, as well as his ability to capture visually stunning moments, with his film "THE BIG BLUE." That film, dealing with free diver competition, made up for many flaws in its plot, with unbelievable images.
Now, Besson has created a visually arresting film that allows the viewer to achieve a meditative state of relaxation, without succumbing to boredom. Besson has organized the film via separate chapters, each with its own emphasis and sense of style. Besson's long-time collaborator, composer Eris Serra, has provided a musical score, perfectly capturing the mood of the image. In fact, the music is more in tune with what's going on than what was achieved with "FANTASIA!"
Whether the viewer is watching a segment filled with killer whales, dolphins or snakes, "ATLANTIS" never ceases to amaze! "ATLANTIS" is a film that can and undoubtedly "will" be watched over and over again!
COLUMBIA TRISTAR has preserved the film's 2.35:1 aspect ratio, with 16:9 enhancement. There are few films, offering underwater photography, which manage to look great. "ATLANTIS" is a rare exception to that rule. The image is flawless! Colors are rich and vibrant, helping in presenting a look at a universe, seldom captured with this much resolution. The contrast is also flawless. The blacks and grays are incredibly deep, offering brilliant delineation in the darkest depths.
While COLUMBIA TRISTAR didn't produce a Dolby Digital 5.1 mix for this release, Serra's score is well complimented with the Dolby Digital 2.0 surround mix provided. There is no narration, only music, and its flows through all of the speakers, enhancing an already magical environment.
