BAIT
The new WARNER BROS. release, "BAIT", is a pretty smart, funny tale
starring Jamie Foxx stars as an ex-con unwittingly used as "BAIT" to
draw a dangerous criminal out of hiding with the hopes of tracking down hidden
loot from a US treasury robbery. After being busted for a minor crime,
Foxx is placed in the same cell as another crook, this one has taken part in a
big robbery and knows where the loot is. David Morse, always
terrific, plays the treasury agent intent on recovering the stolen gold at any
cost. After Foxx is sent back to prison, without being able to furnish
Morse with the correct location of the loot, he's released again, taking part in
a new scheme.
Morse's unit of agents has developed a technology wherein a tracking device can
be implanted into Foxx. After doing so, word is put on the streets that he
knows where the gold is, in turn causing the real thief to come out of hiding
after Foxx, thereby revealing himself and potentially the real location of the
gold.
We may have made the plot seem more complicated than it is. It's not!
In fact, it's extremely predictable. Still, Foxx is an engaging presence
and
the film is well directed. The transfer from WARNER BROS. offers a 2.35:1
image with 16:9 enhancement. It looks terrific! The production
design is extremely pleasing, offering a neon-like look to the film, with strong
color values, even though limited in their range.
Director Antoine Fuqua utilizes sound and image with great effect, as
previously evidenced by his "REPLACEMENT KILLERS." While the
dolby digital 5.1 mix offers some terrific directional effects, they're few and
far between! It's disappointing that the surrounds are confined mostly to
boosting the musical tracks.
There is an audio commentary track with Foxx. While he offers some
entertaining tidbits of information, the listener's patience is really taxed
by much of what Foxx has to say. The director should have been included
for a better, conversational atmosphere.
