Michael Mann, responsible for directing such great films as “HEAT,” “LAST OF THE MOHICANS” and “THE INSIDER,” had a very different background in the ‘80s. Responsible for creating the hit television series, “MIAMI VICE,” he also tried to bring that sort of production style to a film he produced, “BAND OF THE HAND.” It’s a silly film in many ways, but it’s still fun. What works against it most is the horrible direction from Paul Michael Glaser. The cliché’, “he can’t direct traffic” is entirely appropriate here!
The story concerns five juvenile convicts given a chance to redeem themselves by working for the Federal Government, by bringing down a violent drug lord. Of course, they have to complete rigorous training in a dangerous boot-camp before they’re ready. Forget the outrageousness of the plot and one’s still got to contend with the horrible heavy-handed direction. But, “BAND OF THE HAND” is one of those films that’s still enjoyable because of, rather than, in spite of, its direction. It’s nearly impossible to not have a bit of a hidden smile while watching very dated music video montage sequences and horrible dialogue, meant to sound dire and significant. Some of the actors are quite good, but even Laurence Fishburne and Lauren Holly can’t make the script sound good.
Unfortunately, COLUMBIA TRISTAR has elected to only release a pan&scan version of the film. While this drawback doesn’t prevent the film from being recommended, it is still disappointing. The image is decent, although inconsistent. Colors are solid, even vibrant at times. Still, there is significant grain in a few scenes and it’s not as slick looking as we’d have liked.
COLUMBIA TRISTAR has presented a Dolby Digital 2.0 Surround mix, loaded with popular ‘80s songs. It’s also very aggressive, with plenty of surround and directional effects. Dialogue is always intelligible and free from distortion.
Several trailers are included.
