SRP$19.98 2.35:1(16:9) DOLBY DIGITAL 5.1 WARNER BROS

Perhaps the most critically despised film of the past decade, "BATTLEFIELD EARTH" has received its debut on dvd via WARNER BROS with a Special Edition.
In truth, the film does deserve much of the scorn it received.  It's
annoying to see someone as intelligent as Travolta associating himself with a film so devoid of intelligence in terms of its script.
"BATTLEFIELD EARTH" is set on Planet Earth in 3000 A.D.  Travolta stars as the main villain, Terl.  He's an alien from the planet Psychlo.  This breed of alien launched numerous attacks on Earth, ultimately destroying its industry, sending its populace, for all intensive purposes, back to the
stone age.  The film is adapted from a novel by Scientology Founder, L. Ron Hubbard, hence Travolta's involvement.  Hubbard's ludicrous story and the screenplay allowsfor the Psychlos to be mining Earth in search of "gold." Yes, that's right, GOLD!  Apparently, on planet Psychlo, gold is worth a lot too.  When Terl discovers that a new site for gold is uncovered, he takes on a creature that's part human, part animal, as his own personal slave.  In order to make him more loyal he empowers him with Psychlo knowledge as well as history, thinking this will make less inclined to turn rebellious!  Sure, this makes great sense, doesn't it?   For those whom would defend Hubbard's work, one need only ask, did they actually read" the story?   It's just plain stupid!
WARNER BROS. has presented the 2.35:1 aspect ratio with 16:9 enhancement and the transfer is spectacular!  The colors values are solid, vibrant and sharp, but without any oversaturation.  Fleshtones appear natural for the most part, but of course, it's hard to discern the correct colors of Alien beings.
The Dolby Digital 5.1 soundmix is extremely aggressive!  There are numerous directional effects utilizing all of the speakers as well as offering
terrific .1 LFE effects.  While the soundtrack is a little too loud at times
for its own good.  There are no 'subtle" effect moments.  Even atmospheric effects tend to give way to thunderous bass.
WARNER BROS. has provided ample supplements for this release.  To begin with, Director Roger Christian discusses the film's production along with Production designer Patrick Tatopolus provide audio commentary.  Both of these men have substantial credits.  Christian was 2nd unit Director on the first three "Star Wars" films and Tatopolus was the production designer for Roland Emmerich's sci-fi films.  Together, their love and knowledge of their respective crafts and the genre make this an extremely worthwhile commentary.
Other supplements include the wonderful segment:  "John Travolta's Alien Makeup Test" which offers a unique chance in viewing just how much makeup is involved in giving Travolta the disgusting look achieved here!
Another supplement, "EVOLUTION AND CREATION", offers behind-the-scenes footage and interviews with the main talent.  It's promotional fanfare, but better than many similar featurettes.
"CREATIVE VISUAL EFFECTS" is a brief but entertaining featurette with explanations as to how some effects were achieved.
There is also an animated storyboard sequence, which will only be of
interest to those few "fans" of the film.  Theatrical trailers are also
included.
