SRP $38.95 1.85:1 PCM 5.1 SONY

While there's nothing too original about "THE BENCHWARMERS", it's got more laughs than some of the previous Adam Sandler produced films that have been much bigger hits, eg. "BIG DADDY".  John Heder(Napoleon Dynamite), Rob Schneider and David Spade star in this comedy about three adults(?) haunted by the past and even present memories of being bullied.  To fight back, they decide to go head to head with a really mean little league team. What can that prove? Not a whole lot. But, there are a whole lot of funny moments throughout the film and David Spade is terrific.

SONY has provided the correct 1.85:1 aspect ratio for this release.  The detail on this 1080p image is extremely impressive for the most part.  From the opening credits, one can notice terrific detail and absolutely no edge enhancement.  No compression artifacts in this presentation either, but there are a few moments where grain intrudes. Contrast looks great and there are deep blacks throughout.

While the PCM 5.1 mix isn't extremely aggressive, providing a typical comedy mix, with most effects targeted towards the front soundstage, there are some surround moments.  The fidelity is great and never feels artificial. Bass is utilized throughout all speakers in key sequences. The PCM mix is noticeably superior to the Dolby Digital 5.1 mix.

SONY has provided plenty of extras, including two commentaries.(One was enough for this reviewer), four featurettes and two minutes of deleted scenes.
