Best in Show-
We're ecstatic that WARNER BROS. has recently announced plans to finally release
the overlooked, hilarious classic, "WAITING FOR GUFFMAN" on dvd!
In the meantime, however, fans of that great film, will appreciate the
director/writer of that film's newest work, "BEST IN SHOW".
"BEST IN SHOW" is a "mocumentary" in the same vein as
"SPINAL TAP".
However, this time Guest is focusing his satire at the world of "dog
shows!" The subject matter actually offers plenty of room for Guest
and co-writer, co-actor, Eugene Levy to target. The ensemble cast is
incredible. Fred Willard, Michael McKean, Catherine O'Hara and more offer
their individual style of comedy, ensuring numerous laughs and so many subtle
jokes, that it makes the film a great selection for repeated viewings.
While there is a "plot" of sorts, this comedy is really more of an
excuse for great comedic sketches that actually work better in small
segments, as is done here. The main characters help comprise the five
couples focused on, vying for the coveted "BEST IN SHOW" prize.
Although there are a few parts where the film begins to lag, there are
so many more scenes that are "side-splittingly" funny, we can't help
but
enthusiastically recommend this title for your collection!
WARNER BROS. has presented the film with its proper 1.85:1 aspect ratio and 16:9
enhancement. Because the filmmakers are striving for a
"mockumentary" feel to the film, it was actually shot on 16mm film,
bringing it a grainy, documentary atmosphere. The imagery varies at
times. Dull-looking in one scene, grainy the next, it may require some
patience on the part of the viewer, but it actually enhances the film's
intended feel and that's what matters.
WARNER BROS. has presented the film with a Dolby Digital 5.1 soundmix, but
surround effects are minimal at best. There is some minor separation in
the front speaker section, but only to enhance the music.
For the most part, this is a monaural soundtrack. Dialogue is always
intelligible and free of distortion. As with the recent "THIS IS
SPINAL TAP" dvd, Guest has made this presentation a true "Special
Edition!" To begin with, he offers a running commentary with Levy.
While it's extremely insightful, it has nothing remotely similar to the
care-free tone of the commentary on "SPINAL TAP." It's not that
Guest sounds like a stuffed-shirt, it's just that their commentary is more
informational than entertaining.
The "DELETED SCENES" segment is incredible! This section offers
17 deleted scenes, including an alternate ending that's much funnier than
the one chosen for the film! Almost every scene is hilarious, and
although Guest and Levy comment on an alternate track for this section,
that they were excised due to time constraints, they should've been left
in! They're that funny!
The film's original theatrical trailer is also included with letterbox
and 16:9 enhancement!
