Director Hugh Wilson has crafted "Blast From the Past" into an engaging, warm, and even thought provoking film. While "Pleasantville" de-mythologizes the '50s, "Blast From the Past" glamorizes it! Christopher Walken is fantastic as a scientist whom has raised his family in a bomb-shelter for over three decades. When his son, Brendan Fraser, decides to explore the outside world, he meets Alicia Silverstone and a vastly different world than he imagined.
The dvd transfer is superb! Color values and contrast are flawless. The 2.35:1 aspect ratio is a necessity to fully capture the widescreen compositions director Hughes has devised with great skill. The dolby digital 5.1 sound is extremely active, and there's a wonderful soundtrack as well.

Director James Foley is responsible for making "The Corruptor" much more than another John Woo inspired shoot-em-up in Chinatown film. While the film deals with corruption inside the police department, it also explores the complications/clash of cultures, as well as the integrity/values that can bring them together. It manages to do all this while telling a suspenseful tale, filled with action and stunning visual compostions as well!!!
The dvd transfer is excellent. The blacks and grays are distinguishable throughout in every lighting scenario. The dobly digital 5.1 features an outstanding sound mix, extensive LFE portions, and a great score from Carter Burwell.

Sean Penn heads an all-star cast in "Hurly Burly", a new title from NEW LINE. Thankfully, NEW LINE includes enough features to make even their "Non-Platinum" releases a collector's dream. Included with the fine presentation of the film are two audio commentaries, one with Penn and the director, another with the film's writer. The theatrical trailer is also included.
The film follows the tribulations of several characters within the fast-paced world of Hollywood. Penn and most of the characters are constantly burning the candle at both ends, offering witty dialogue, but missing out on the big picture that's the black void of their lives. Some may grow tired of the dialogue, but this reviewer loved it! Well shot, the dvd offers a stunning transfer with excellent color values and contrast. The dolby digital 5.1 sound mix is also impressive, coming to life within the first few seconds when Penn's character is watching a thunderstorm on t.v. and the rear speakers kick in with great impact.
