SRP $19.98 1.85:1 DOLBY DIGITAL 2.0 MONO WELLSPRING

Director Bruce Beresford's best film, "BREAKER MORANT" is available from WELLSPRING. This gripping drama takes place during the Boer war in Australia.  Edward Woodward is "Breaker" Morant, a Lieutenant, well praised for his feats as a horseman.  He and two other soldiers fight for the British against the Germans in the Boer War of 1901.  Due to ridiculous political appeasements as well as other political aspirations from army brass, the three are given a monkey trial on the charges of murder relating to Boer prisoners. The whole cast is great, but Jack Thompson stands out as Major Thomas, their defense attorney during the court-martial.  As the hurried trial begins, we and the defense attorney learn from flashback sequences, of big secrets relating to their "crimes", but these scenes also raise bigger questions concerning morality and its place during war as a whole.

WELLSPRING has provided the correct 1.85:1 aspect ratio for this release.  Unfortunately, it hasn't been enhanced for 16:9 screens. While it does suffer from grain, the image is generally decent. Colors aren't rich, but they're generally consistent. Fleshtones are adequate, but tend to veer off in a few scenes.  Contrast is suitable, however, in darker scenes, the black/gray contrast doesn't offer superior definition.

The Dolby Digital Monaural track is fine. Dialogue is always intelligible, however, fidelity is limited.
