Well, "BRIDE AND PREJUDICE" has been adapted and "re-adapted" for the big screen and small screen many times. Some offerings have been decent, some abysmal. But, "BRIDE AND PREJUDICE", is one of the best "loose" adaptations, because it's faithful in its overall message of love, only.
The story has been retooled as an American accessible "Bollywood" film. One of four sisters plans on going against her family and Indian tradition for a pre-arranged marriage, wanting to marry someone she's actually attracted to, instead!
When she meets a rich, attractive American, like a Hepburn/Tracy relationship, there's arguments and passion intermingled together. Of course, there are many subplots, and an Indian suitor wishing for marriage will stop at nothing to thwart her plans.
Under the direction of Gurinder Chadha, "BRIDE AND PREJUDICE" works as an appealing romantic, comedy, that's actually much smarter than many of the other films competing for this genre. It's also quite beautiful to watch and fun for the whole family.
BUENA VISTA has preserved the film's 2.35:1 aspect ratio with 16:9 enhancement. It's a stunning transfer! Colors are lush in every instance. There's terrific detail and no sign of artifacts anywhere!
BUENA VISTA has presented a Dolby Digital 5.1 mix. While the mix is extremely effective during the musical sequences, surround effects are restrained during the non-musical moments making up most of the film. Dialogue is always intelligible and free from distortion.
BUENA VISTA has thrown in plenty of extras! Audio commentary with the director and co-writer is included. They are quite amiable together and even with long lulls in commentary, it's a fun listen.
Several deleted scenes are offered, and while one is rightfully excised from the film, the rest, arguably would've contributed to the film's reflection on culture clash.
Four "extended" versions of songs are included on this dvd, but it's sad the longer version, released in India, hasn't been included here.
