“CHARMED” will most likely outlast “BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER” and while it’s not nearly as consistently well-written as that show, it’s still pretty darned good and it has actually improved, for the most part, as it’s moved forward, and losing one of its original stars, Shannon Doherty, proved to be a great thing.

The first season introduces audiences to the three sisters, Piper, Phoebe and Prue. Each has their individual powers, important in their weekly episodic fights against all sorts of demons. While there’s some chemistry visible in season one, Doherty is typically just annoying.  Episodes vary greatly in quality, and some are actually just dreadful. But, the few that are good, are really good, making it just enough worthwhile to hang around for the whole season.

PARAMOUNT has provided the original 1.33:1 aspect ratio for this release.  Colors are solid, but there’s a surprising amount of grain throughout many episodes. Contrast varies in quality too, with the image typically lacking clarity in darker scenes.

PARAMOUNT has provided a Dolby Digital 2.0 Surround mix.  It’s not aggressive, but surround effects kick in at the right moments to boost some key sequences. The music is well complimented. Dialogue is always intelligible and free from distortion.
