FOX continues its impressive foray into DVD with two new releases. Neither "Cousin Bette" or "Slums of Beverly Hills" were theatrical hits, but they have a chance to find their rightful audience with the excellent dvd transfers now available. Jessica Lange and Elisabeth Shue are splendid in this tale of sexual manipulation within a costume-epic setting. While it's reminiscent of "Dangerous Liaisons" it also differs greatly enough to provide fine entertainment. The transfer fully compliments the wonderful costumes, perfectly presenting their vibrant colors without over-saturation. While we were at first disappointed to find that this release isn't Dolby Digital 5.1 encoded, the Dolby Surround is wonderful, with excellent use of directional effects. A theatrical trailer is included.

"Slums of Beverly Hills" is one of those completely overlooked comedies that will probably find its audience on home video, like another fine comedy sleeper, "The In-Laws". Alan Arkin stars as a father trying to keep his family within a Beverly Hills zip code for the potential it offers at a better future. Natasha Lyonne is wonderful as the daughter dealing with puberty as well as the other problematic elements of the 70s. The supporting cast, including Marisa Tomei, is excellent!
The transfer is fine, although it doesn't have the slick, fine polish of bigger budget films. The fleshtones are excellent. It has received a 1.85:1 transfer. The dolby digital 5.1 sound offers an added boost to the wonderful soundtrack and some decent directional effects moments.
