$19.98 1.85:1(16:9) MONO ANCHOR BAY ENTERTAINMENT

Anchor Bay is has previously released the theatrical version of Ken Russel's erotic-over-the-top successful woman hiding a secret life as a hooker, film.  The few minutes that have been added here, don't enhance the overall impact of the film, but they do add more depth to one of the characters.   For those who might be surprised at the current looking Kathleen Turner having been considered sexy, they need only to look at her in the opening sequence of the film, as her alter-ego, China Blue, to understand her appeal.  Kathleen Turner gives one of her most daring performances as a fashion designer by day/hooker by night, soon to be entwined with a weird(and we mean "very weird") Anthony Perkins.

ANCHOR BAY ENTERTAINMENT has included a running commentary with Russell and producer Barry Sandler. Russell is always interesting, though dry at times. Sandler makes the commentary and filmmaking appear more accessible than does Russell here, and there are some entertaining tidbits about the film's actual production worth listening to.

The image has been preserved with the proper 1.85:1 aspect ratio and 16:9 enhancement.  The image is sharp, and with improved definition over the previous version. Contrast is also improved, with deeper blacks and grays in the darker scenes. Fleshtones appear natural.

The monaural sound is fine, although fidelity is surprisingly limited during some musical cues. Dialogue is always intelligible and free from distortion.
