Director Zhang Yimou's latest, "CURSE OF THE GOLDEN FLOWER" has been released on dvd. A "b-i-g" historical epic, the plot is thicker with rivalries, a planned coup, Macbeth-ian overtones and more. "CURSE OF THE GOLDEN FLOWER" is one of those special films in which viewers can find new revelations with repeated viewings. While there are various sub-plots and many captivating characters, Gong Li, has the ability to magnetically draw the viewer to her, as her character does to those around her. She's captivating in every scene and only wishes she was on-screen even more than she is already.
While this is a more plot-driven film than Yimou's previous films, there are plenty of visually stunning action sequences, within an already visually stunning film.
SONY has provided the correct 2.35:1 aspect ratio for this release with 16:9 enhancement. Colors are rich and vibrant in every scene. Even with production design that could easily cause a problematic transfer, the image never falters. It's stunning! Contrast is excellent, offering deep blacks and grays.
SONY has provided a Dolby Digital 5.1 mix. It's an aggressive mix, filled with discrete and panning effects. Surrounds are utilized with great impact, especially during action sequences, but even in more subtle moments as well. The music is well complimented throughout.
In addition to a multitude of trailers, there is a featurette filled with behind-the-scenes moments and interviews. Another short segment offers a few minutes of a red-carpet appearance for the film's actors.
