Emmanuelle Beart of "MISSION IMPOSSIBLE" fame, made her American debut in "DATE WITH AN ANGEL." The film isn't in the same league as "SPLASH," but it does try to go for that type of "fish out of water" atmosphere. Michael E. Knight was a soap opera star in the '80s, and here he plays a professional businessman eager to marry his girlfriend, Phoebe Cates. While not a perfect film, "DATE WITH AN ANGEL" is still pretty decent entertainment for the entire family, especially around the holiday season, and at the low SRP of $14.98, we recommend it as an addition to every collection.
After his friends throw a party, he's stunned to find a beautiful angel(Beart) has injured her wing and crashed into her pool. This sets up numerous complications as he tries to hide her true background from everyone, and Phoebe thinks he's cheating on her.
There are some good laughs as his friends, initially, devise ways to exploit her. Of course, soon enough, everyone but Phoebe falls in love with her, and let's be honest, Emmanuelle Beart is simply breathtaking to observe. Anyone who found Daryl Hannah to be pretty in "SPLASH," will reevaluate her after seeing Ms. Beart here. One mistake the filmmakers may have made here, was to downplay Ms. Cates' beauty. She's made to look wholly unattractive and bossy, so we'll root for the hero in a relationship with the angel, but it's almost too manipulative. A few more surprises would've made this a great film.
ANCHOR BAY ENTERTAINMENT has preserved the film's 2.35:1 aspect ratio with 16:9 enhancement. This isn't one of ANCHOR BAY ENTERTAINMENT'S best transfers. The image appears to be soft throughout, and while there's decent color values, they're never as vibrant as they've been on many of the superior ANCHOR BAY ENTERTAINMENT releases. It's also grainy in many spots. Contrast is decent, however, with deep blacks and grays, offering definition in darker scenes. Fleshtones appear natural.
ANCHOR BAY ENTERTAINMENT has provided a Dolby 2.0 Surround mix for this release. While there are few surround effects, the score is decent, and complimented throughout all speakers. Dialogue is always intelligible and free from distortion.
