Director/co-writer Patrick Lussier deserves a lot of credit. While far from perfect, his revision/homage of the "DRACULA" films is far better crafted than the bigger grossing, bloated "MUMMY" films from mediocre director Stephen Sommers!
"DRACULA III" isn't as impressive as the first film of the series, but is much better than the 2nd film. After a quick flashback sequence explaining some things from the previous film, the story picks up with a gallop as vampire hunters chase Dracula to the old country. It's a lot of fun and there are plenty of chills as well. Most surprising is how good Rutger Hauer is as Dracula! Especially after how bad he was in the tv series, "SALEM'S LOT"! But, that was horrible all around, and Hauer can't be blamed.
The entire cast, including Roy Scheider, is terrific here. There is a lot to like about this film and it's worth owning.
BUENA VISTA has preserved the film's 2.35:1 aspect ratio with 16:9 enhancement. Colors are solid and there's incredible detail in the frequent dark scenes. Contrast is flawless throughout. Fleshtones appear natural(when they're supposed to, that is!)
BUENA VISTA has provided a Dolby Digital 5.1 mix that's extremely aggressive, adding to the film's frequent chilling atmosphere. Dialogue is always intelligible and free from distortion.
BUENA VISTA has included some great extras. In addition to a fun audition segment, the commentary is terrific!
