"DRAGON WARS" has been released on blu-ray from SONY. A Korean monster flick, its horrible script, mediocre special effects, and sluggish direction make the other Korean monster film, the superior, but not great "THE HOST," seem like a masterpiece.
It's really hard to describe the plot. It's not because it's of a non-linear structure or something like that, but, rather because it doesn't really have one. It's just a bunch of mediocre ideas having little to do with one another, thrown in to a script, held loosely together by very bad, "B" movie dialogue, that fails to explain anything going on. The filmmakers like to throw in shots of knights in armor, fireballs, battle scenes that lack intensity or "outcome," and of course, dragons! BLECH! While some may find it to be one of those films that's so unintentionally bad, it's fun, this reviewer found it to be just pure crap.
The special effects, while not bad, aren't better than any found on a typical modern video game, and they don't blend well with the rest of the "live action."
SONY has provided the correct 2.35:1 aspect ratio for this 1080p/AVC MPEG 4 transfer. The image varies in quality from shot to shot, with some scenes looking great, with rich colors and decent depth. But, there are just as many shots with excessive grain. The special effects, although average, are enhanced with the resolution, presented with great detail in many scenes.
SONY has provided a Dolby TrueHD 5.1 mix. For all the action incoherent actions scenes making up the majority of the film, it's surprising that the mix isn't a particularly aggressive one. Surrounds kick in with discrete effects at various times, but it's not till the 2nd half of the film that the mix comes to life, with non-stop panning and better dynamic range. Bass is featured prominently, but varies in quality throughout, sometimes feeling inappropriate and distorted.
Storyboard comparisons and a featurette are included.
