A remake of a Japanese film, based on a true story, "EIGHT BELOW" offers enough thrills, adventure, and breath-taking scenery, to entertain audiences young and old. Paul Walker stars as a rugged, endearing guide, working in the Antarctic, assisting researchers as they travel the dangerous terrain. During one of his expeditions, a storm and sudden emergency force him and his human companions to evacuate by helicopter, leaving his beloved sled dogs behind to fend themselves, facing almost certain death.
A large portion of the film is devoted to Walker back in America, as he struggles in deciding how and whether or not to attempt a rescue mission for the dogs. There are plenty of great moments in the film, but also plenty of annoying moments as well. The human story is much less interesting than the story of the dogs struggling to survive, and it's a shame more time wasn't focused on just them.
Still, the film overcomes most of its flaws and it even holds up on repeated viewings.
BUENA VISTA offers the correct 2.35:1 aspect ratio with 16:9 enhancement. While the image is generally impressive, the colors aren't rich enough to do the great locations justice. It's a decent image, but it just lacks the depth we'd expected.
BUENA VISTA offers a Dolby Digital 5.1 mix that's demonstration quality! This is a thoroughly engrossing soundtrack, filled with panning effects, great music balance and separation. The dialogue is always intelligible and free from distortion.
There are plenty of extras here. Two audio commentaries, deleted scenes and a featurette.
