Robert Rodriguez fans will find that both “EL MARIACHI” and “DESPERADO” have been remastered and re-released.
While both were offered together as part of a two-pack, this newly
remastered version of “EL MARIACHI” offers better color balance than in the
previously available version. There’s still a bit of grain and dirt,
however, the film was shot for around $7,000.00,
so the original source elements aren’t perfect! This is the best the film has looked on dvd or in theaters, so fans of the film may find it worthwhile upgrading for this reason alone.
COLUMBIA TRISTAR appears to have released the same Dolby Digital 2.0
mix as on the previous version. Having been made on less than a shoe-string,
there’s not much in the way of separation here. However, the sound is
decent, and while fidelity is limited, it’s more than adequate when
considering how well the film works as it does.
COLUMBIA TRISTAR has included the same audio commentary provided by
Rodriguez on the previous two-pack. It’s a great commentary! While
we still enjoy Ed Burns’ commentaries, aspiring filmmakers will learn much
more, and on a fast-track from listening to even a little bit of Rodriguez’s
Two other features, available on the previous version, are included
Rodriguez’s short film, “BEDHEAD”, and the outstanding, must see
“10MINUTE FILM SCHOOL”.
New to this release, is the brief look at his upcoming “ONCE UPON A
TIME IN MEXICO”. It offers a little behind-the-scenes footage.
Trailers for “EL MARIACHI”, “DESPERADO” and “ONCE UPON A TIME IN
MEXICO” as well as some other COLUMBIA TRISTAR films are also included.
