BUENA VISTA has released the Disney animated hit, "ENCHANTED," on dvd and blu-ray.  While mostly live-action, there are portions, throughout, but mostly the opening and ending sequence, that are animated. And, wonderful animation it is! It harkens back to the times of when Disney created its best animated films, "SLEEPING BEAUTY," "SNOW WHITE" and others, creating wonderful, endearing characters, blending homes, foliage and wildlife together seamlessly in a storybook atmosphere that's hard to look at without smiling.

Beautiful Princess Giselle is about to marry the man of her dreams, until the wicked queen intervenes, throwing her down a dark well, thus causing Giselle to end up in the "real" horrific world of Times Square, emerging from a man-hole cover over the sewers. Of course, seeing a girl, dressed as a princess with a long flowing gown, might not strike New Yorkers as too unusual, and that's kind of the running gag in the film. Two different worlds collide as Giselle meets and is sort of rescued by Patrick Dempsey and his daughter. Dempsey is engaged to someone else, and it's no time before the viewer realizes he and Giselle are meant for each other. Giselle's cartoon-like innocence and abilities have carried over into the live-action world, so when she causes animals to appear in a luxury apartment to help clean, or people in Central Park to break out in song and dance, it feels sort of natural!

The music is good, and while not all the songs are great, there is one, "THAT'S HOW YOU KNOW" that actually ranks up there with any classic from the studio.

BUENA VISTA has provided the correct 2.35:1 aspect ratio for the dvd(with 16:9 enhancement)and 1080p/AVC MPEG-4 on a BD-50 Dual layer disc for blu-ray.  The image on dvd and blu-ray is slick and well polished. In fact, it's brighter and cleaner than we recall it having been in its theatrical presentation.  Colors are rich and contrast is impressive, offering deep, inky blacks for superior detail in darker scenes. Of course, the depth available on blu-ray blows the dvd out of the water!!! There isn't one scene, on blu-ray, wherein the picture doesn't have that "jump off the screen" effect one hopes for! However, as good as the dvd looks, it's still basically a flat looking, but clean, experience. There are a couple of minor artifacts we noticed on dvd as well, but not enough to diminish the overall stellar quality. The blu-ray, ranks up there with the best blu-rays available so far, from any studio!

BUENA VISTA has provided a Dolby Digital 5.1/DTS mix option for the dvd and Dolby TrueHD 5.1 mix for the blu-ray.  Both mixes are fantastic. While there isn't a non-stop pounding of special effects in the rear, surrounds are used consistently to compliment the wonderful score and in providing ambient effects. There are some great LFE and discrete effects, but most separation is dedicated to the front soundstage. Again, that isn't to say surrounds aren't active. THEY ARE!!! But, they're used effectively and judiciously. While the dolby digital mix of the dvd is fantastic, it doesn't offer the same dynamic range of the Dolby TrueHD mix of the blu-ray. The DTS mix option of the dvd comes very close to reaching the fidelity of the TrueHD mix found on blu-ray, providing better balance and deeper bass than the standard Dolby Digital found of the dvd. Still, the TrueHD mix is notably better than the dvd mix options.

Both formats offer the same great extras, including featurettes,a pop-up adventure, bloopers and deleted scenes. However, the blu-ray offers most in HD.
