Everybody Hates Chris - The First Season
SRP $49.99 1.78:1(16:9) DOLBY DIGITAL 5.1 PARAMOUNT

PARAMOUNT has released the first season of “EVERYBODY HATES CHRIS”.  Loosely based upon the youth years of creator Chris Rock, but targeted towards a family office, “EVERYBODY HATES CHRIS” demonstrates that Chris Rock’s humor can be as engaging without the rougher language fans are typically used to.  Tyler James Williams plays young Chris and he’s absolutely terrific. He has real charisma on screen and doesn’t rely on the over-the-top acting that so many young kids do these days, for ooohs and aaaahs.   Young Chris attends a primarily all-white school and is often the target of other kid’s taunts and fists. Thankfully, the show focuses on many other aspects of Chris’s family life and the supporting cast provides even more fine acting and laughs.  Even more impressive than this, there are some memorable guest appearances throughout the first season. Jimmy Walker is even on hand for the episode,  “EVERYBODY HATES FUNERALS”.

The first season features 22 episodes over 4 discs and many of them are funny enough to warrant repeat viewings. “EVERYBODY HATES PLAYBOY” and “EVERYBODY HATES HALLOWEEN” are probably destined to be tv classics.

PARAMOUNT has presented the show in its proper 1.78:1 aspect ratio with 16:9 enhancement.  The image is nearly flawless. While grain intrudes here and there, colors are extremely rich and the series actually has an impressive production design to it, complimented well with this transfer.  Contrast is fine, with generally deep blacks and grays.

PARAMOUNT has provided a Dolby Digital 5.1 and Dolby Digital 2.0 mix. The 5.1 mix varies in its aggressiveness. For the most part, there are plenty of atmospheric effects emanating from the surrounds. Most separation effects are delegated to the front speakers.  Music is well complimented through all speakers, but it apparently has been altered for this dvd release, due to copyright problems.  Dialogue is always intelligible and free from distortion.

PARAMOUNT has really thrown in some great extras for this release!  In addition to commentaries on four episodes, there are deleted scenes(most of which are quite funny), interviews, and even the audition videos for all the cast members!
