COLUMBIA TRISTAR has released the provocative thriller, “THE EXPERIMENT” on dvd. Moritz Bleibtreu stars as Fahd, a man wanting to earn some extra money as a paid volunteer in an “experiment” meant to create a prison environment. He and other volunteers will be assigned roles as either prisoners or guards. The experiment runs two weeks and is meant to explore the social effects of power on regular people. While the experiment is monitored via round-the-clock monitors and cameras, there’s a constant, chilling atmosphere within the prison setting, making the participants and the viewer all the more tense.
It’s not going too far in calling “THE EXPERIMENT” a great film! The
dramatic tension builds from each scene to the next, and it’s extremely
There are many important issues raised in the film, and the filmmakers never patronize the audience. While the film’s atmosphere creates many scary moments, it’s more shocking and revelatory to find how easy it is for regular people to succumb to the worst possibilities of human nature.
COLUMBIA TRISTAR has preserved the film’s 1.85:1 aspect ratio, with 16:9 enhancement. While there are some print related defects, the image is generally sharp. Colors are well balanced, and contrast is excellent, with deep blacks and grays, allowing for excellent detail in darker scenes. Fleshtones are natural throughout.
COLUMBIA TRISTAR has presented a German Dolby Digital 5.1 mix, which is more aggressive than we’d expected. Surrounds are used effectively in virtually every scene, and the way in which the director utilizes sound for the film, elevates the overall quality of the film even higher. Dialogue is always intelligible and free from distortion. “THE EXPERIMENT” is a great film, and it’s a great dvd! Several trailers are included.
