FOX has released the summer hit, "FANTASTIC 4: RISE OF THE SILVER SURFER," simultaneously on dvd "and" blu-ray!   While this sequel has been made even more "family-friendly" than the original, it's also more enjoyable. Sure, there's not much in the way of tension, but "RISE OF THE SILVER SURFER" at least feels like a big film, whereas its successor failed in this manner.  There are many more jokes and winks at the audience in the sequel, and although there's a menacing force about to engulf the earth, much of the film's atmosphere, matches the playfulness surrounding the pending nuptials for Sue and Mr. Fantastic.

The CGI effects for this one blow away the original film too.  The only real disappointment lies in the fact that the "Silver Surfer" (voiced with great effect by Lawrence Fishburne) has so little onscreen time, and he's certainly the most intriguing thing in the film!

FOX has presented the 2.35:1 aspect ratio(with 16:9 enhancement on dvd) for both formats.  The image is excellent. Detail on the dvd is notably better than was its predecessor. Colors are rich and lively, and deep blacks and grays offer excellent clarity in darker scenes. Artifacts are non-existent.  The blu-ray presentation offers the 2.35:1 aspect ratio with 1080p/AVC MPEG-4.  It's also formatted on a BD-50 dual layer disc, whereas the original film was presented on BD-25.  The production design for this sequel is more elaborate than its predecessor and colors are more vibrant than on the impressive dvd version.  Detail is also notably superior, with virtually every scene having a "pop-off-the-screen" type of depth!  Although a few of the darkest scenes lack the depth of the rest of the film, these moments are few and far between.

FOX has presented a Dolby Digital 5.1 mix for the dvd and DTS-HD Lossless Master Audio Format for the blu-ray.  The dvd mix is aggressive with numerous surround/panning effects. Bass is prominent in key scenes and it's a well balanced mix, allowing dialogue to always be intelligible and free from distortion.

The DTS-HD Lossless mix of the blu-ray is even better! The chase scene between the Silver Surfer and the Human Torch makes for one of the best "demonstration-quality" sequences, we've ever experienced on blu-ray!  The dynamic range is outstanding!  This ranks as one of the best blu-ray mixes available!

FOX has provided lots of extras for this release.  All of the dvd extras are carried over for the blu-ray, plus the added benefit of most of these extras in 1080i. There are two audio commentaries, and both are fun. There are some featurettes, a documentary and a disappointing deleted scenes segment. Trailers offered on the blu-ray are in full 1080p!
