UNIVERSAL has released "FAST TIMES AT RIDGEMONT HIGH" as a HD-DVD combo, with the HD-DVD on one side and the standard dvd on the opposite side.  A film more than 25 years old, it's filled with age-related flaws, including grain and drop-outs. Still, it's actually much more impressive than this reviewer expected.  It's generally a sharp transfer. UNIVERSAL has preserved the film's 1.85:1 aspect ratio.  Colors are typically rich, although colors can be oversaturated at times.  The contrast is excellent, providing a benefit to scenes that suffer on the standard dvd to the lack of deep grays and blacks.

UNIVERSAL has provided a DOLBY DIGITAL PLUS 5.1 mix.  While it offers better dynamic range than the dolby digital 5.1 found on the standard dvd, separation effects are rare. Bass is almost non-existent.  The film's score is terrific and it's a shame it isn't better complimented here, save for a few minor instances. Dialogue is always intelligible and improved upon over the standard dvd with better clarity.

UNIVERSAL provides all of the extras from the "Special Edition" version on the standard dvd side, including commentaries and more.
