Director Abel Ferarra loves to confront his audiences with controversial material, and he's going to have a hard time outdoing his work in "The Bad Lieutenant", a film truly deserving of the NC-17 it received .  Harvey Keitel is magnificent as the title character, a man seeming to have no redeemable qualities until confronted with the brutal rape of a nun.  The film is as gritty as Taxi Driver, and equally troublesome.   The dvd transfer is excellent in most aspects.  The 16:9 enhancement brings out depth and clarity in almost every scene.  There are a few night scenes wherein artifacts are present however.  The dolby Surround sound is active.
