SONY's original blu-ray release of "THE FIFTH ELEMENT" must have sent shockwaves of disappointment for early blu-ray adopters. It wasn't even slightly better than its dvd counterpart in terms of video quality. To Sony's credit, they've really lived up to the term, "remaster!" Not only is the image like night and day when compared to its crappy predecessor, but they've included a new Dolby TrueHD 5.1 mix now as well!
SONY has increased the master from the previous BD-25 to BD-50 dual layer and from MPEG-2 to AVC MPEG-4. What a difference it has made! None of the artifacts plaguing the original release are here. Even better, the colors are astoundingly richer and contrast is flawless! There were problems with fleshtones as well, and now they're perfectly rendered.
SONY's inclusion of a new Dolby TrueHD 5.1 mix along with the same PCM 5.1 mix that was offered on the original release, adds even more of a reason to purchase this release. While the increased bitrate offers some improvements in bass and discrete effects, it's not a huge difference in quality over the already fine PCM mix.
