SRP $24.95 1.85:1(16:9) DOLBY DIGITAL 5.1 COLUMBIA TRISTAR

Apparently, made direct-to-video, "THE FOREIGNER," starring Steven Segal, is now available from COLUMBIA TRISTAR.  We'd never heard of this one, and we do like to know what Segal films are coming out so that we can avoid them. "THE FOREIGNER" demonstrates that what made the only two good films Segal has made, entertaining, had nothing to do with Segal.  "UNDER SIEGE" and "UNDER SIEGE 2" were simply well-written and directed.

In "THE FOREIGNER," Segal plays Jonathan Cold, an agent trying to deal with the recent death of his father.  We're supposed to know he's depressed by the way he mumbles his lines, with shoulders shrugged.  His newest mission is to deliver a secret package to an important businessman in Europe.  Of course, along the way, there are many out to stop him.  Plenty of people are killed and plenty of things blow up, but every time a bad guy is killed, we're disappointed! This is because that's one less bad guy to finally take Cold out and end the film! It's really hard not to root for anyone that could make the film shorter!  Segal, for no good reason, ends up with the industrialist's wife, and there's no sensual tension here either.  It's a bad film all around.

COLUMBIA TRISTAR has preserved the film's 1.85:1 aspect ratio with 16:9 enhancement.  The image is only of average quality. Colors are subdued, contrast is average, and even the fleshtones are inconsistent.

The Dolby Digital 5.1 mix is aggressive, offering numerous surround and directional effects.  It's a great mix, but it can't make up for a dull film.

There are several trailers included.
