Elisha Cuthbert is “THE GIRL NEXT DOOR” in this teen-targeted comedy,
being released on dvd from FOX. This “GIRL NEXT DOOR” just happens to
be a porn star, and she’s caught the attention and desire of her
high-school neighbor, Emile Hirsch. What could easily have become a
silly “getting laid” sex-comedy ala “American Pie” ends up being much
more mature and even poignant. Cuthbert proves her ability to carry
a film here and we only wish she was featured even more. She’s
terrific. The film failed miserably at the box-office, mostly due to
its poor marketing. It was marketed as a “titillation” type of
comedy, when Cuthbert never even appears naked. Once younger viewers
being targeted caught onto this fact, the death knell had been
sounded. “GIRL NEXT DOOR” actually is more reminiscent of “RISKY
BUSINESS” in tone and originality than any other teen comedy, and it
shouldn’t be missed.
FOX has preserved the 1.85:1 aspect ratio with 16:9 enhancement.
Colors are solid and often vibrant. Contrast is flawless, offering
incredible detail in darker scenes. Fleshtones are perfect
FOX has provided a Dolby Digital 5.1 mix. While we were disappointed
that the music didn’t get the surround presence it deserved, there
are some effective directional/panning moments. Dialogue is always
intelligible and free from distortion.
The director, Luke Greenfield, provides a running commentary as an
option with the film. It’s quite good, offering a candid look at
what the director did an didn’t like with the final film. Cuthbert
and Hirsch provide commentary to some selected scenes on the 2nd
side. A section of deleted scenes and an alternate ending is
available as well. There are some other fun extras, including a
featurette taking place at an actual porn convention.
There are rated and unrated versions being offered. As we only
reviewed the “unrated” version, there wasn’t anything that seemed
racy, even for an R movie.
