Kids of all ages, but, of course, mostly, young girls, will enjoy the long-awaited arrival of "HANNAH MONTANA: THE COMPLETE FIRST SEASON" on dvd, from BUENA VISTA.
Miley Cyrus stars as Miley Stewart, a likeable, goofy 14 year old, trying to balance her life as a normal(?) teen living in Malibu, with her alter-ego life as "Hannah Montana, a huge pop-star success, while virtually everyone outside of her family and closest friend, Lilly(played remarkably well by Emily Osment)is unaware are both the same person. Of course, the premise with her hiding this big secret sets up some consistently funny(even for adults)situations, the show's success lies heavily on the the likeability and talent of the cast. Billy Ray Cyrus, Miley's real dad, plays her father, and while he's not Olivier, or George Clooney, he's more than amiable enough to add even more charm with semi-adult perspective to the various goings on of each episode.
There's an obvious requirement for adults to overcome/ignore the incredulity to the show's premise, but it's not an insurmountable task, and, at times, the show even resembles a kid's version of "I LOVE LUCY."
It's easy, even after viewing the first two episodes, to understand why the show and its star have been so successful.
26 episodes are offered in the "Complete first season," and all are enjoyable, with some, including "It's My Party and I'll Lie If I Want to" standing out as the best.
BUENA VISTA has presented these episodes over 4 discs, with the original 1.33:1 aspect ratio. Colors are generally consistent, and the image is fine, although not ranking up there with the best of tv-on-dvd offerings, due to an overriding softness to many scenes. Detail is decent, but never comes close to the many better looking tv-on-dvd presentations offered by BUENA VISTA.
BUENA VISTA offers a Dolby Digital 2.0 mix, which is adequate, but lacking any of the impressive dynamic range offered on many big-budget("DIRTY, SEXY MONEY," "ELI ROTH,"etc)tv shows available on dvd from BV. Dialogue is always intelligible and a english caption option is also offered.
BUENA VISTA also included games, pop-up trivia and a featurette.
