While most younger audiences identify Ron Howard as a
director(APOLLO 13, THE MISSING) older viewers like myself remember
him from the long-running, upbeat and very funny tv series, “HAPPY
DAYS.” The series was so warm-hearted and genuinely funny that it
made viewers long for the ‘50s time period it captured, whether it
offered a realistic depiction or not. Upon viewing the series today,
it also makes the viewer long for the simpler days of the past.
Today’s comedies may try to be more complex and witty, but they’re
generally not as entertaining as this series consistently managed to
be on a weekly basis.
While James VanDerbeek may have been a heartthrob for
girls, back in the ‘70s, that standing undoubtedly belonged to Henry
Winkler as “THE FONZ.” The supporting cast, including Tom Bosley,
Danny Most, Anson Williams and Marion Ross, made for one of the best
ensembles in tv comedy history.

PARAMOUNT has provided the original 1.33:1 ratio for this
presentation. Unfortunately, it didn’t receive the cleaning it
deserves. Colors appear dull in comparison to most PARAMOUNT
releases. They’re never rich, and contrast is only of average
quality. Fleshtones appear natural.
PARAMOUNT has provided a Dolby Digital Monaural mix.
It’s a decent
presentation, with above average fidelity, as is evidenced by the
theme song’s clarity. Dialogue is always intelligible and free from
