Matthew McConaughey stars along with his "then" girlfriend Penelope Cruz and Steve Zahn in the action/comedy, "SAHARA". McConaughey's Dirk Pitt and his buddy, are treasure hunters. When they've been given info that a civil warship, the "Texas" may lie on the Niger river, he has 72 hours to find it. So, starts what is intended to be a fast paced, "Amazing Race" kind of story. Although there are gigantic plot-holes and some horrible dialogue, the film moves along at a steady pace and it offers enough light-hearted fun and semi-tension to make the film worth seeing. The cast is terrific and while it falls way short of reaching an epic-status, there are some great moments, wherein it almost feels like, with some major revisions, it could have been one!
PARAMOUNT has preserved the film's 2.35:1 aspect ratio. It looks awesome!!! "SAHARA" offers one of the best looking HD-DVD transfers released so far! The wonderful cinematography is complimented in every scene here. The colors are so flawlessly rendered and the detail is so consistently incredible, that it looks just short of 3-D! If only "all" HD-DVD could look this good!
PARAMOUNT has provided a DOLBY DIGITAL PLUS 5.1 and DTS mix. Both mixes are extremely aggressive. While the front soundstage boasts most of the separation effects, the rear speakers and subwoofer are used extensively in many scenes, creating an incredibly entertaining experience. Dialogue is well balanced, and never overshadowed by layer upon layer of effects and music. The DOLBY DIGITAL PLUS 5.1 mix offers slightly better clarity than the DTS. BRAVO, PARAMOUNT!!! BRAVO!!!
All of the extras from the dvd have been carried over for this HD-DVD release.
