"THE HILLS HAVE EYES 2: UNRATED" has been released on blu-ray by FOX. It's actually one of those rare sequels, that while flawed, is still more fun than the original. Having little to do with the first one, this opens with a national guard unit on a seemingly standard mission in the New Mexico desert, being picked off, sometimes, slowly, sometimes fast, by the mutants hiding within the hills. It plays like a take-off of "SOUTHERN COMFORT" meets "HILLS HAVE EYES", being that this unit is quickly without any ammo to fight them with. Pushing the gross factor on this one, are scenes involving the mutants raping a woman captive, seeking to procreate their breed, and extreme violence. Fans of the first one, for its goriness, will still find this one to have its moments, but "HILLS HAVE EYES 2" actually is better paced, and less "faux-artsy" than its predecessor.
FOX has provided a 1080p transfer with the correct 2.35:1 aspect ratio. It's a great transfer! The browns and various hues of the desert are perfectly replicated without ever overshadowing the richness of other colors that pop up. Depth is nearly flawless, and it's a huge improvement over the standard dvd, in every scene. Most of the scenes on this blu-ray offer "pop off the screen" depth! Contrast, especially in the frequently darker scenes, is excellent, with deep blacks and grays. This is a demonstration quality presentation.
FOX has provided a DTS-HD Lossless Master Audio 5.1 mix. Again, "DEMONSTRATION QUALITY!!!!" From the opening seconds to the end, this is an aggressive mix, loaded with discrete/panning effects that collaborate with the bass that's always just simmering to appear, in creating one of the most engaging mixes available on blu-ray. Outstanding!
FOX has provided numerous extras for this, including deleted scenes(ho-hum), an alternate ending(actually pretty good) and a gag reel and some other featurettes.
