It's hard to make any thriller with aspects of amnesia, work! "THE I INSIDE" is one of the latest whose mystery revolves around a patient, Ryan Phillippe, waking in a hospital to find that he's been brought back to life after suffering from a coma for two years. Adding to this trauma, he's also told his brother died in a car accident and he's married, although he doesn't have any recollection of who his wife really is. "THE I INSIDE" borrows from numerous other thrillers, including the underrated "SHATTERED". Still, "THE I INSIDE" succeeds where even "MEMENTO" didn't because it's not trying to be too smart. It's trying to entertain and that it does! It's tightly directed and plays at a gripping pace.
Sure, there's some very predictable moments, but there are more than enough surprises, including a pretty good ending, to make this one highly recommended.
BUENA VISTA has preserved the film's original 2.35:1 aspect ratio, with 16:9 enhancement. It's extremely impressive with solid, bright colors and fine detail, even in the darkest scenes. There is some grain, especially in darker moments, but overall, it's a terrific transfer.
BUENA VISTA has provided a Dolby Digital 5.1 mix. While effects are mostly delegated to the front soundstage, there's a consistent sense of separation there and the rears kick in, increasing the tension during just the right moments. The musical score is also well complimented through all speakers. Dialogue is always intelligible and free from distortion.
