Just the premise alone for "THE INCREDIBLES" is incredible! Superheros, plagued by lawsuits, have gone into hiding, been given new identities and humdrum civil servant type jobs. Bob Parr(Craig T. Nelson) tries his best to fit into his small car, average joe house and new life, but he craves for the crime-fighting days of the past, secretly reliving his past with Frozone(Samuel L. Jackson)by listening to cb radios and getting a rush from listening for any crime-fighting activity. But, when he's contacted by super-secretive forces to journey to a secret island for a top-secret assignment, Parr's alter-identity, "MR. INCREDIBLE" has to take charge once more.
The humor and absurdity of the situations thrown upon Mr. INCREDIBLE in the beginning calls to mind the brilliant comedy of the old "NATIONAL LAMPOON" magazine wherein the ACME company was being sued for defective equipment sold to one Wile E. Coyote! Director Brad Bird is no stranger to great visual comedic animation. His overlooked but fantastic "Family Dog" failed on tv, but was released in its entirety on laserdisc(WE NEED IT ON DVD!)and showcased the potential brilliance revealed here! There's hardly a minute that passes by that doesn't amaze the viewer. Sure, "TOY STORY" was great, but it's not as technically impressive or hilarious as "THE INCREDIBLES"! It's also a film that holds up after many repeat viewings!
BUENA VISTA has preserved the film's 2.35:1 aspect ratio, with 16:9 enhancement. The imagery is flawless! The detail, color and sharpness is staggering to behold in every scene! The colors are so incredibly rich that it's one of the best "DEMONSTRATION QUALITY" dvd examples we've ever seen!
BUENA VISTA has also provided an incredible soundmix. The Dolby Digital 5.1 mix is aggressive throughout the entire film. While most panning effects are focused across the front stage, there are more than enough rear speaker/panning effects to give any decent sound system a worthy workout. When LFE/Bass effects are employed, the subwoofer adds yet another terrific dimension to an already terrific film viewing experience. Dialogue is always intelligible and free from distortion.
BUENA VISTA has added numerous extras for this release. Audio commentary options for Director Bird and Producer John Walker is a lot more entertaining than the one offered on an alternate track from animators, but both are worthwhile, especially for aspiring filmmakers.
A terrific short, "JACK-JACK ATTACK" has been created just for dvd, and sheds light on a gag near the film's ending, dealing with the baby. There are several deleted scenes, "behind-the-scenes" footage, interviews, numerous interviews and featurettes, and,...of course the wonderful short, "BOUNDIN'" shown with the film in theaters. RUN TO ADD THIS TO ANY SERIOUS DVD COLLECTION!
