One of the best romantic comedies of all time, "JERRY MAGUIRE," has finally gotten its due on blu-ray, from SONY. There are so many things great about "JERRY MAGUIRE," but most of all, while still being a crowd pleaser, it's never dumb, always beautiful, and full of inspiration. While one might think it's a "sports" film, that's just the business the main character is involved in, but it might as well be wall street or pharmaceutical sales. It's not about the business, it's about the man. Director/writer Cameron Crowe has always shown great intelligence and creativity, even within flawed films, "(ELIZABETHTOWN, ALMOST FAMOUS), but "JERRY MAGUIRE" is undoubtedly his masterpiece. It's not only extremely well-written, well-acted, and well-shot, but everything about it is perfect, or at least close enough to "perfect." Who can't smile, when watching and feeling the joy Jerry finds when first leaving "Cush's" home, believing he's still got his client's loyalty, and bursting out in song along to "FREE FALLIN'" while it blasts on his car radio?
There are so many moments like these throughout the film, they're too many to mention. But, "Jerry Maguire" is one of those titles that absolutely deserves to be in every serious film lover's blu-ray collection, so long as the video/audio quality is there,....so,....how is that?
Well,.... fans won't be let down! SONY has provided the correct 1.85:1 aspect ratio for this 1080p/AVC MPEG-4 transfer. While there's some slight grain present, it's less noticeable than on the dvd. Colors are typically rich, complimenting the beautiful cinematography that paints almost every shot. Blacks are inky, ensuring great detail in even the darkest scenes. Check out the "Secret Garden" sequence, taking place at night, during Jerry's date for evidence of the depth. We just checked out the Showtime HD presentation for comparison, and the blu-ray offers notably better contrast.
SONY has provided a Dolby TrueHD 5.1 mix for this release. While not an aggressive surround mix, subtle effects are used effectively throughout. During key sequences, the well chosen score and discrete effects kick in for maximum impact. Dialogue, music and ambient effects are perfectly balanced throughout. A really pleasing mix.
SONY has provided virtually all of the extras found on the 2 disc special edition dvd, including a great commentary with the directors and main cast, rehearsal footage, a music video, deleted scenes, and an "EXCLUSIVE" blu-ray video montage of the Jerry Maguire mission statement.
