MGM has released “JUDGMENT AT NUREMBERG” on dvd.
A compelling drama,
Spencer Tracy stars as the Chief Justice of the famous trial of War
Crimes defendants. At over three hours, this courtroom drama never
drags. The acting is wonderful, and along with Tracy are Burt
Lancaster, Maximilian Schell, Judy Garland, and Richard Widmark, to
name but just a few of the superstars.
MGM has provided the original 1.66:1 aspect ratio,
however, it’s not
enhanced for 16:9 viewing. Even without the enhancement, the image
is wonderful. Detail is wonderful, with great depth in even the
darkest scenes. There is minimal grain, especially when compared to
the laserdisc version.
MGM has both a Mono and 5.1 mix. Surrounds are only
used to boost
the film’s score and for minor atmospheric effects. The dialogue is
always intelligible and free from distortion.
Some great extras are included. Maximilian Schell and
actually conduct great interviews with one another. Mann also reads
the terrific verdict speech, originally read by Tracy in the film in
a segment titled “THE VALUE OF A SINGLE HUMAN BEING.”
