Director Antoine Fuqua can create a great action scene and whenever they're there in "KING ARTHUR: DIRECTOR'S CUT," the film's entertaining. Unfortunately, while the film aspires to tell a more "historically accurate" tale than the mythical one of Arthurian legend, so many viewers are accustomed to, little feels realistic here. The main characters lack depth and the supporting characters are semi-cartoonish in their actions and dialogue. Worse, even after avoiding the commonly used "fantasy" elements typically found in this legend, the last part of the film offers some ridiculous moments, far less believable than anything magical found in the "LORD OF THE RINGS" trilogy!
BUENA VISTA has provided a 1080p/MPEG-4 transfer with 2.35:1 aspect ratio. For the most part, especially in brighter moments, the detail is outstanding. However, darker scenes offer less than deep blacks and grays, creating moments with noticeably diminished detail. Colors are rich and well saturated. There are moments where the image pops off of the screen. But, there are plenty of scenes wherein the image depth is just good but not great! While it's much better in terms of depth than the dvd version, it's disappointing that this image isn't on par with the exceptional one found in Fuqua's other current blu-ray release, "TEARS OF THE SUN."
BUENA VISTA has provided a PCM 5.1 mix. It's an aggressive mix, filled with virtually non-stop surround action. Discrete, panning and bass effects create an entertaining environment throughout. Most will appreciate the sound mix, however it's not as well balanced as other superior BUENA VISTA BLU-RAY releases. Dialogue is always intelligible and free from distortion.
BUENA VISTA has provided a lot of extras in 480p, including a roundtable discussion, commentary, alternate ending(terrific!)and more!
